Thing 23

Special thanks to NEFLIN staff (Stephanie, Brad, Patty and Jennifer) who work so hard to make sure the librarians in this area stay up to date with library information as well as technology through websites. Your work is greatly appreciated by all of us. It is training like this that keeps librarians informed of the most recent changes in the library world without you all doing all that you do some of us would not have a clue about library changes. Keep up the good work. I will be looking forward to another online training like The 23 Things

Congratulations! You have completed Thing 23! We hope you have enjoyed the process and will continue to learn about and use technology in your personal and professional life.

Thing 22

I have learned a lot and I will continue to access the various websites offered through the 23 things. I am hoping that when we upgrade our computers we will be able to access more of the online videos and websites that we weren’t able to access properly. Thank you for sharing this information with the Putnam County Library System.

Thing 21

This I can see being very beneficial to honor students in high school or college. Due to the fact that we are very close to the community college I could see the staff learning to use it properly to share the information with these students. I would like to see a site like this one geared for businesses.

Thing 20

I have to agree that the younger generation seems to be geared more towards technology than the middle age or older generations are. I personally have a connection to holding a book in my hands and reading, computers aren’t always guaranteed to work, but once I have the book, I have it until I return it. Online reading is a resource for sharing as well as learning what other alternative are available if your local library doesn’t have a particular book. I think online reading is a great way to introduce children to the various styles of reading programs available online to assist them with their reading. It is also a great tool for patrons that are illiterate that want to learn to read. Reading online has so much to offer to anyone whom has an interest in reading.

Thing 19

The social networking websites listed here are interesting. This list of websites has something on every subject area of interest for everyone. There is so much that we could offer to the patron now that we now have the knowledge of the websites. I can see the patrons, as well as, the staff sharing and learning from the websites listed under library thing 19. I am going to make it one of my priorities to get with co-workers and make a list of the various sites that our patrons and staff can benefit the most from.

. I’ve enjoyed visiting the various websites and will continue to learn as much as I can about them and share the information with patron and staff. I think introducing some of these websites to the managers at the managers monthly would be a great asset to our system.

Thing 18

I think Facebook and Myspace is a great resource e when used for the right purpose. I like that fact that it is can be used to tutor or instruct students, due to so many people loosing their jobs and going back to school. It’s great also in the fact that they offer so much more than people use them for. Just think what it would be like if every thing that it offers was used. What a wealth of information and knowledge would be made available to the world. I would like to see the Putnam County Library System at some point use it to share what they are doing with the surrounding counties.

Thing 17

Podcast is very interesting. This I can see myself learning how to use for work and staff training. I watch the http://www.commoncraft.com/podcasting video and found it very interesting. I like that fact that you can connect to world and communicate with people or things of your interest. What a great resource for sharing that which you have learned with so many people. I found that Podcast has more to offer than I ever imagined. I will be using Podcast

Thing 16

YouTube is an excellent site when used properly, but as we know there are always does that use various sites improperly. I think YouTube is another way to provide in-house training. I find YouTube to be beneficial to libraries in so many ways. It’s a way that patrons can learn how to use the technology we have available to them through online databases without having to come into the library teach, so that they are comfortable using whatever technology that they may want use with knowledge of how to use it properly. It’s also a way to advertise past and upcoming events in the library system, as well as, with your neighboring counties.

Thing 15

I would use Rollyo, I like quick access to online databases. To be able to create a personal/group account that you know you can trust to have the most accurate online information available is an excellent resource. Having group access would be even better because of having access to even more databases than those that you know about, or haven’t heard of that you could benefit from. I feel as though any time that you are affiliated with a group, it expands knowledge.

Thing 14

I think the online productivity tools would be good if we had the time to create some of the different tools made available to us. I find that I really do not have the time to do this. I see how libraries could benefit from these tools if they had someone to stay on top or them.

Thing 13

I like the Library Thing website, because I enjoy reading Christian novels, and to be able to catalog my personal collection online is wonderful. To be able to go to this website and share your list of books with other that have the same interest is a good way to continue reading items of your interest with recommendation on the same subject that you have an interest in is very helpful. Library Thing would be a good resource to have access to through our homepage for our patrons to connect with other patron that has the same subject interest. This way they could share reading list from around the world with people that have the same interest.

I like this whole idea of sharing information online.

Thing 12

I think wiki is okay for those that chose to use it, but I personally don’t use it, due to the fact that anyone can go in and change or add anything that they chose to. I think that if you are going to have access to information online that it needs to be accurate information for those who don’t know that anyone can put anything they chose to put on this site. On the other hand it is the researcher’s responsibility to verify the information they chose to use.

Wiki is an okay a website that should not be use for research, but if someone chooses to use this site they need to verify the information depending on what you are using it for.

Thing 11

The social media I find very helpful, especially for the patrons who come in looking to read the most recent news/information that we sometimes have to wait for it to come through the mail. I clicked on several of the websites offered and found them to be quiet interesting.

With the economy being in the financial situation it is in. The more we can inform the public that they have access to online that they can benefit from without having to come out of pocket with money, the more useful we become.

This websites under this thing 11 will be explored by me at a later date when I have more time to play with it.

Thing 10

I would use tagging in a heart beat, due to organization. Organization to me is a key to accomplishing whatever you set out to accomplish. To have an account with delicious and to be able to tag items however you see fit is great. You could create a personal code for each item that you chose to tag. I will be going back to play some more with this website. I am going to enjoy learning all that there is to learn about this website as well as some of the other websites that have been introduced through this 23 Things @ NEFLIN.

Thing 9

The web 2.0 is a unique website for sharing information in the various ways without having to leave the library or in some cases leave your home. I think that any time we can share information from one end of the world to the other at no cost, not only for us

but for our patrons as well. One of the neatest things to do is a power point presentation of anything you chose to do it on for the public and allow them to be a part of the presentation.

When our patron does things that represent the library we, could have a power point showing what they presented. This may gain the interest of other patrons to be a part of what is going on in their local library

Thing 8

This tool is great for those of us that have a reference librarian. I don’t see the regular staff having the time to stay on top of it so that it works properly. It would be nice to shave someone that has the knowledge work with the regular staff to show them how to retrieve the basic information. I will continue to work on this tool to increase my knowledge and share it with the staff to assist our patrons to the best of our ability.

Thing 7

I would use this website to promote and plan programs and events. I think that it is a good tool to use for teaching. I could see how the children librarian could benefit from it greatly. It would also be a good way to introduce local politician for getting to know the politician in your community. This can be a fun site to learn to use for staff and public.

Thing 6

I think it is a neat site for those that are interested in it. This is something that I could probably learn to like if I had more time to do it. It’s a site that would be great for doing things through the various libraries. It is also a site that I would recommend to use to use for genealogy and archive.

Thing 5

Flicker is an interesting site for sharing photos from various programs or events that takes place in our libraries from around the world. It’s also a way to provide outreach interest as well as hopefully some support for the different activities that we would like to offer.

I am not a photo person, but I still think it’s a neat website.

Thing 4

The RSS seems to be a nice website to have access to. My problem is finding the time to create all the different sites and having the time to use them properly with my other job duties. It is not one that I would make a priority to create an account for.

Thing 3

Delicious is one the most interesting websites I found online so far. I will be creating an account with them due to the fact that it would allow me share reading area of interest with people all over the world, and allow people to share information back to me about what they recommend to read next.

I really like the website.
